The evening will be divided in three different talks of aprox. 45 minutes. Here are the speaker's abstracts for their talks:

Presentation 1:

"NewSQL Database for New Real-time Applications"

Presentation by Peter Idestam-Almquist

Abstract:

New real-time applications require databases that can process larger volumes of transactions than what is possible with current market-leading relational databases. And while more recent NoSQL databases are able to scale out so that they can handle extremely large volumes of data, they cannot guarantee consistency. While this is acceptable for some types of data such as social network bulletin boards, it does not work for most business critical data such as stock quantities or money. But what if there was a happy medium? A database that could process millions of transactions on a single machine, while maintaining the consistency that these business critical applications require?

There is!

In this presentation, Peter Idestam-Almquist will describe a different kind of a NewSQL database, which will process millions of ACID-compliant transactions while scaling in on a single machine to fully ensure consistency. He will also delve into the technical differentiators between traditional relational databases, NoSQL and NewSQL databases and what applications they are best-suited for.

About the speaker:

Peter Idestam-Almquist is the Chief Technology Officer of Starcounter. Peter has more than 20 years of experience in software development and management of IT companies. In 1996, he founded web technology consultancy company, SITE, and two years later, Peter founded consultancy broker company, Konsultmarknaden. He served as a Chief Technology Officer of both these companies before he joined Starcounter. Peter has a Ph.D. in computer science from Stockholm University, where he also taught as a Professor of Computer Science for ten years.

Presentation 2:

"The simplest DB possible that actually works"

Presentation by Anton Keks

Abstract:

Contrary to the latest trends, I don't think there's anything wrong with SQL or RDMS - they are stable, proven and easy to use.
However, they can be expensive or just an overkill for your application. I will demonstrate how surprisingly simple your database backend can really be, without compromising features or performance. As the term of polyglot programming has been introduced, it makes sense to choose the best and simplest tool for the job. Meet node.js and dirtydb!

Presentation 3:

"NoSQL in the Energy Domain"

Presentation by Achim Friedland

Abstract:

With renewable energy sources coming into vogue over the last years, the interest in managing their volatile nature in order to provide an all-day safe supply is more and more a challenge.
But instead of just building more and bigger power lines, we propose that the management of energy related data is the more important and future-proof approach.
This talk will give a short introduction into the challenges of energy data processing and show how to choose the right NoSQL tools for the different aspects of this quite large and complex problem domain.

About the speaker:

Achim is co-author of: “NoSQL: Entry into the world of non-rational Web 2.0 data bases” and a pioneer in the field of NOSQL technology. Currently Achim is project manager, hard- and software architect and engineer at Belectric IT Solutions, earlier he has been working as the head of research and developmentat at sones GmbH. Area of expertise: Unconventional solutions. With his well-founded background, Achim is an important member of the NoSQL matters 2012 program-committee.
