Topconf: When did you first think you wanted to work in IT industry?
Etiene: I always liked computers, I used to make blog templates and run some game servers when I was a teenager, but my decision to do this as a career came later. I was majoring in Music, classical piano to be more precise, while working with programming on the side. That was when I finally realised I was getting more satisfaction with programming than with music, so I decided to switch.
Topconf: What is your motivation to speak at Topconf Tallinn 2015?
Etiene: The tracks are really interesting! Plus, I have never been to Estonia and I think this is an incredible opportunity to meet the developer scene and the community at Tallinn.
Topconf: What personal characteristics does someone need in order to be successful in IT career?
Etiene: Curiosity and social skills. Having interest for how things work is the first step to get in and, later, working well in a team and having a sense of community is a recipe for great progress.
Topconf: What excites you about working in the IT industry?
Etiene: Being around innovation, working with progressive people, the community and how it keeps trying to improve other working aspects such as respect, inclusion and diversity.
Topconf: What do you like best about your job/career?
Etiene: Learning new things all the time, not just things related to IT.
Topconf: What do you like least?
Etiene: It really bothers me when I see people being hostile to newbies or trying to prove they're "better". Collaboration should be the rule, not competition. It also bothers me that it is not diverse, but I'm glad there are many initiatives around to fix that.
Topconf: What is you life/career motto?
Etiene: "Happy people do a better job."
